TikToks from Black creators or “#BlackTikTok” has become one of the most popular tags on the addictive social media app. Black creators express their creativity in multiple ways while viewers can enjoy the uniqueness each creator brings to the hashtag. These Black TikTok creators perfectly represent the entertainment adored by the TikTok community — enticing them to get hooked on the app and scroll for hours!

Tray Reads

Tray creates videos with his funny antics, facial expressions, and interpretations of trending sounds. On comedy TikTok, he has garnered 1.4 million followers for his entertaining personality. But recently, he has ventured into a new space on the app. Tray Reads is his new page specifically for #BookTok, and he is bringing a balance of his comedic cues to the platform of Black readers. In just a month of his time on Black BookTok, he has gained over 52,000 followers. While he may be new, the beauty in Tray’s work is his ability to spread book love to people who are new to reading and BookTok. He brought fans of his who had previously never been on this tag by still providing what they love in his work. The formula of using catchy sounds and funny reactions to the books he’s reading makes watching him just as fun while learning about the joy of reading.

Aliyah’s Interlude

Fashion TikTok is less about comedy and more about information and expression. Aliyah shows her audience that fashion TikTok can be just as entertaining as any other side of TikTok. She has come a long way since she began her time on the app, now creating music — even walking runway shows! But it’s the content she made that gave her the opportunities she has now. She shows her audience that she will always create looks based only on her style and preferences. With so many people enjoying and taking inspiration from her content, Aliyah continues to encourage her audience that dressing to express their own personalities and styles is important in fashion. She also refuses to let people who disagree with her fashion choices drag her down. Her content mixes funny quotes and thoughts that are relatable to her audience, giving viewers the personality we see in her fashion.

Emmanuel Duverneau

Another huge part of TikTok is #FoodTok, an informative yet exciting side of the app. Not only are you learning recipes to try in your kitchen, but you’re also discovering dishes you may have never heard of before. Emmanuel Duverneau is a creator who brings the fun of making food and entertainment together. His content shows him making mouth-watering meals while dancing between cuts. This type of content draws viewers in for multiple reasons. It’s not just the amazing food he makes; it’s the happiness he radiates while highlighting Black artists in his dance cuts. He was featured in a Creator Spotlight highlighting the trail blazers of BlackTikTok. He mentions the most important part of his content is to give a platform for Black creators to show their talent. His food is inspired by Black culture with a twist on it, so viewers can get the same inspiration to make their own twist on dishes.

Dimpey

TikTok has always been mostly known for its laughs and lighthearted content. #ComedyTok is easily one of the largest spaces on the app, with creators from all types of humor, bringing a little light to their followers. Dimpey is a great introduction to the comedy side of Black TikTok. While trending sounds are enjoyable, Dimpey uses Black culture to bring personality to situations, creatures, or even inanimate objects. His content’s beauty stems from proof that Black comedians are both talented and creative with their comedic vision. Dimpey’s followers never expect the same content, with him bringing new material in each post. This TikTok, exploring what parking lot birds may be thinking proves he breaks the mold of ComedyTok. As Emmanuel mentioned in his Creator Spotlight, Dimpey is an example of Black creators making their own trends.

The creators mentioned above prove the #BlackTikTok platform is an expression of Black talent and entertainment. Carving our own tag on the app has given Black TikTok creators opportunities to express themselves and redefine entertainment for the new generation of viewers who will continue to grow with new Black representation uploaded daily.

All components of an outfit are important for your creative expression and identity. But what truly completes your outfit are shoes. Among the various kinds of shoes, sneakers allow for the most individuality. In recent years, the sneaker community or “sneakerheads” have captured the attention of the media and general public. This attention came from the long lines at stores during new launches, extensive collections, national conventions, and the reselling industry. With reselling, some shoes can be worth thousands of dollars. But this industry could not have flourished without the influence of Black culture. Black Americans and artists have been pioneering sneaker culture and street style, but their influence has constantly been washed down by others. As hip-hop celebrates over 50 years of its cultural significance, let’s explore the intersection between the genre and sneaker culture.

History of the Sneaker

The first sneaker was created by the Liverpool Rubber Company in the 1830s. Originally called plimsolls, these shoes had a canvas top with a rubber sole and were originally worn by Victorians for beach outings. Throughout the latter half of the 19th century, new versions of the rubber-soled canvas shoes were developed to be more comfortable and better suited for sports activities. Later on, they were referred to as sneakers, a play on words due to their quietness compared to other types of shoes.

The sneaker as a sports shoe grew in popularity after athletes wore the shoes in the 1900 Olympics. With more and more athletes, such as Jesse Owens and Charles “Chuck” Taylor endorsing sneakers from brands like adidas and Converse, fans grew interested in donning a pair themselves, hoping to be as great as the athletes. After the heightened visibility and popularity of sports, thanks to the television, sneakers became more than a sports shoe. Now, they were associated with the athleisure lifestyle. But the sneaker would soon become a staple in fashion and music.

The Rise of Hip-Hop and Sneaker Culture

Created by Black and Latino youth and young adults in Bronx, New York, hip-hop is a cultural movement that emerged as a response to poverty, political strife, and white flight. It served as a form of self-expression to deal with the issues of living in the city, sometimes acting as a way to resolve conflict without the use of violence. While the hip-hop movement began during the late 1970s, it transitioned from an underground movement to an increasingly well-known subculture in the 1980s. A misconception that many people have about hip-hop is that it only consists of rap music. However, the movement includes other various elements, such as DJ-ing and graffiti art. One of the most important facets of the hip-hop movement was breakdancing.

Breakdancing is a form of street dance that involves popping, locking, and acrobatic and martial arts movements. This form of dance is performed on a flat surface — sometimes a cardboard box — in order to perfectly execute the dynamic moves. One of the most important aspects of breakdancing was making sure the dancers had the best shoes to perform in. Known today for their skateboarding shoes, the California-based sneaker company, Vans, originally created and marketed sneakers specifically for breakdancing.

Creation of a Sneaker Anthem

Formally known as the “Godfathers of Hip-Hop,” New York-based group Run-D.M.C. heavily influenced fashion during the 1980s. As hip-hop became increasingly popular and transitioned from underground to mainstream, Run-D.M.C. and their fashion were at the forefront of this movement. Inspired by the fashion of Black youth in New York City at the time, the trio’s iconic uniform typically comprises a Kangol bucket hat, gold chain, adidas tracksuit, and a pair of white adidas Superstars with three black stripes on the side. Taking notice of their effect on the adidas brand and a newspaper letter negatively associating wearing sneakers to felons,. To showcase their overall influence on listeners and prove that wearing sneakers doesn’t negatively affect one’s success, the group released the ultimate sneaker anthem with their 1986 single, “My Adidas.

While performing “My Adidas” during one of their concerts at Madison Square Garden, group member Rev Run instructed audience members to take off one of their shoes and hold it in the air. Adidas executive Angelo Anastasio was stunned by the group’s influence. Soon afterwards, Anastasio met with the adidas team in Germany and the deal was sealed. This historic collaboration opened the door for future collaborations between musicians and prominent sneaker brands.

Sneaker x Black Music Collabs

Following Run-D.M.C.’s collaboration with adidas, multiple Black music artists have formed partnerships with famous sneaker brands. Rapper LL Cool J went on to partner with ‘80s hip-hop sportswear brand, TROOP, in 1986. During the ‘90s, artists such as Master P, MC Hammer, and Shock G of hip-hop group Digital Underground also collaborated with popular shoe brands. Even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, signed a contract with LA Gear in 1990. The $20-million endorsement deal also included the release of a collection of sneakers inspired by the artist.

Entering the new millennium, as the hip-hop genre exploded, so did the number of Black artist and sneaker collaborations. Rappers such as Missy Elliot and Aminé have collaborated with brands, such as adidas and New Balance, to develop their own shoe lines. Even Vanessa and Angela Simmons, the daughters of Run-DMC member Rev Run, produced their own line of sneakers called Pastry. Now more than ever, the influence of Black artists and citizens on sneaker culture and streetwear is evident.

Looking Ahead: Community, Culture, and Black Identity

Today, sneakers are no longer just for athletes as they originally were. They have become a global icon in fashion and an extension of one’s individuality. Recent data from famed online luxury marketplace StockX shows that despite economic difficulties, there continues to be strong interest and demand for sneakers. With top brands like Nike and adidas routinely collaborating with music artists and releasing limited edition sneakers, sales are sure to increase this year as well.

Over the last decade, the sneaker community shifted from being focused on the creative and political expression of Black American youth to focusing on increasing the profits of the white-majority sneaker sellers. While it’s great to see how far the sneaker community has expanded, the erasure of Black Americans’  impact and influence within the sneaker community is worrisome. It is important for sneaker companies, consumers, and sneakerheads to continue to share the history and acknowledge the significance of the original Black sneaker influencers.

On March 13, Megan Thee Stallion set the internet ablaze when she revealed a list of cities that would be part of her summer tour starting in May. Fans first got a taste of the news on a Good Morning America segment last January where the rapper told the morning show, “‘The Hot Girl Summer Tour’ is gonna be 2024 summertime…I do wanna give the hotties the Megan Thee Stallion experience.” This marks a major milestone in Megan Thee Stallion’s career as she embarks on her first headline arena tour across the U.S. and Europe.

The rapper has done a number of major festivals including Coachella, One Music Fest, and Outside Lands. Her sets can be described in one word — electric. Filled with twerking, impressive vocal performances, and intricate choreography, Megan Thee Stallion performances are one of a kind.

A Hot Girl Summer

After a considerable break from making music to take time for herself, Megan Thee Stallion has been returning to the spotlight with a smash. While she bagged a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 for her January single “Hiss,” she also plans to follow that success with a full-length studio album later down the line.

Fans who are eager to see the Houston rapper hit the road can sign up now for artist presale on Megan Thee Stallion’s website. The Hottie presale begins on March 21 at 1:00 p.m. and will run until 10 p.m. local time. However, fans with a Citi credit card can access Citi presale tickets from today until March 21 at 10:00 p.m. For fans who missed out on these presales, the general sale will begin on March 22 10 a.m. local time. The 31-date-tour will make stops starting from May 14 and ending on July 27.

Yeah Glo!

Fans online were curious and excited to see who would be joining Megan on tour. Last year saw explosive success for women in the rap game. With such a diverse pool of women talent across the industry, there were a wide range of fitting artists who could find a placement on the bill. However, on March 20, Megan Thee Stallion revealed that she would be taking GloRilla with her. The Memphis rapper has been a hot topic across social media, finding her major breakout with the infectious track “F.N.F (Let’s Go)” in 2022. Since then, she has held her own with notable collaborations including “Tomorrow 2” with Cardi B

Looking good and feeling good has been a big part of gaining confidence as a Black woman. Unfortunately, looking expensive has a reputation of needing the income to match. As the cost of living increases, more women have found ways to get a lavish look or lifestyle without it costing an arm and a leg. Ahead, EnVi has compiled different ways Black women can elevate their lives and appearance while saving money.

DIY Lash Extensions

While strip lashes are a tried and true part of a makeup look, lash extensions have made a mark in the beauty industry. Strip lashes have a wide variety of fun lash looks, but extensions give a more natural look along with taking a time-consuming step out of your routine. They also help create a makeup look without the makeup. Unfortunately, lash extension prices are not as appealing. Luckily, more and more tutorials and kits have come out, providing the tools to pull off the same look without the price. Kits like these, when done right, can last up to a week. Not only do you look good, but doing it yourself feels good too!

HEATHER’S LUX
DIY Eyelash Extension Kit

Monochromatic Clothing for Less

When dressing as your inner “it” girl, a monochromatic look is a classic option. Monochromatic dresses, blouses, and bottoms can be paired together to make a beautiful ensemble. This look is perfect for adding accessories that cater to your expression. Buying these clothes through cheaper sites such as Amazon or searching through Ross and Marshalls is a more inexpensive option with a look just as nice as higher-priced counterparts. When shopping, stick to clothing that accentuates your shape and is not covered in bold designs. Wearing monochromatic clothing can give an elegant look while keeping money in your pocket.

Press-On Nails

Going to the nail salon can be a satisfying leisure activity, and at one point, was an affordable one. As demand grows higher and designs get bolder, the price for getting your nails done has risen. For a while, press-ons had a bad reputation for not looking as neat and popping off faster. However, Gen Z has proven to be innovative with DIY beauty options. With tips from creators like Justine on TikTok, press-on nails can last up to two weeks to a month. Also, amazing artists on apps such as Etsy have made press-on nails just as gorgeous as the ones done at the salon. Press-ons not only save money and make you feel more put together, but it also saves a lot of time. Add doing your nails to your at-home maintenance day!

Neutral Home Decor

How your day goes begins with what you see when you wake up, and a beautifully decorated home starts a productive day. While other tips on this list are tailored to your appearance, decor that matches is just as important in feeling like your best self. Neutral home decor can create an expensive look and it doesn’t have to cost the same. Adding elegant and neutral-colored vases and candles creates a sleek look and luxurious ambiance.  Another decor choice is artwork that matches neutral tones. Cost-effective sites like Amazon and Etsy have simple artwork that can be under $10 but look much more. Framed pictures with encouraging words or pretty art are what you are looking for on these sites. All of this decor adds a beautiful look that shows your taste without cluttering your space. When you see these pieces, they’ll give you even more confidence for your day or make you feel comfortable when you rest.

Handbags Under $100

Getting handbags from T.J. Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, and Burlington have become more popular the last few years. Most handbags at these retail stores are budget-friendly and the choices are endless for whatever look you’re going for. When creating an expensive look, you can look for handbags like those mentioned in Nia Lewis’s TikTok, as they are more simple and timeless. You want to search for bags with minimal to no flashy designs in a neutral color. While Lewis may go against bags from brands like Juicy Couture, which usually has its logo printed clearly, these can still be nice for more casual looks that still feel high-end. Handbags are an expression of your taste, so when shopping at these stores, make sure to pick bags that ultimately catch your eye the most. There is no better way to feel good than enjoying the pieces you wear.

All of these tips can help enhance a Black woman’s beauty and build confidence and strength. A normal income and cost of living should not stop women from becoming the luxurious person they want to be. Use these tips when shopping or decorating and feel the difference in your life!

From Black Mirror to Nope, Daniel Kaluuya is no stranger to starring in Black sci-fi stories. The Academy Award-winning actor stepped behind the camera for his directorial debut with The Kitchen (2023). After premiering at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2023, Netflix released the film for streaming on January 19. Kaluuya and co-director Kibwe Tavares bring viewers to a dystopian future where Londoners must find resilience amidst classism and forced displacement.

Into The Kitchen

The Kitchen imagines the potential fate of London’s lower class through a blend of modernity and futurism. The title refers to the name of the housing complex serving as the story’s main setting. The Kitchen is the last remaining public housing in this futuristic London facing demolition. Occupants of the estate face overpopulation, a lack of resources, and frequent physical aggression from police officers. The film’s uncanny reflection of reality and unique critique of society leave a strong impression on viewers.

The plot follows Izi, a single man working at a funeral home with hopes of soon moving out of The Kitchen. His self-centered nature is challenged when he meets a young boy named Benji, who is left to fend for himself after the death of his mother. Benji searches for guidance and community within the dangers of The Kitchen. The movie unexpectedly develops into an emotional exploration of morality as Izi must reconsider his priorities in life.

The Cast

The majority Black cast adds relatability for Black viewers. Even despite the extreme circumstances the residents face, there is still room for music, culture, and celebration. The Kitchen strongly showcases that Black people deserve major roles in sci-fi stories, and their identities do not have to be compromised.

Actor and rapper Kane Robinson, popularly known as Kano, delivers a memorable performance of character development through his role as Izi. The opening scene introduces him as he showers despite an announcement that water is scarce. The flashing alarms and desperate shouts from residents waiting outside are disregarded, and Izi’s individualistic mindset shows. His conversations with others throughout the film slowly unveil emotions suppressed by the weight of The Kitchen.

Jedaiah Bannerman hits the ground running in his acting debut as Benji. Fueled by curiosity and searching for family after loss, his character adds a fresh perspective to the story. Benji experiences the conditions of The Kitchen for the first time alongside the audience. The fragile nature of Benji’s circumstances evokes attachment within viewers. His perspective also offers insight into the effects environment and role models can have on Black youth in desperate times.

Hope Ikpoku Jnr embodies resistance in the role of Staples. The young leader takes the initiative to direct acts of retaliation against the authorities and upper class. Staples shows a turbulent reaction to the conditions of The Kitchen. While Izi buries his emotions inside — turning to isolation and escape — Staples chooses to fight back in defense of the community. This is reflected in the tense interactions between the two and their respective influences on Benji.

Though the film follows these three characters, every resident of The Kitchen supports the delivery of the story’s message.

The Fate of Black Futures

From the characters to the soundtrack, The Kitchen effectively presents a relatable Black sci-fi movie. The lack of unnatural slang and inaccurate representations of culture is refreshing; it is evident that the story was written from a place of understanding and experience. The context of the film also proudly challenges pre-existing stereotypes.

While there is a slow start, the raw emotions and thought-provoking story are worth it, and it leaves room for more development and background into The Kitchen. Kaluuya and Tavares created a timeless conversation piece by using a Black speculative lens to spotlight real issues in underprivileged communities. The similarities between reality and their London dystopia force the audience to recognize the urgency for change.

Music from Black artists has been making waves for generations. Artists have had such a wide array of great songs in recent years. However, tracks from before the 2020s that are still popular today can truly be called iconic. Check out the five iconic tracks EnVi chose from across the decades.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”

When it comes to Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, choosing one song is almost impossible with so many iconic hits from the legend. Jackson was always an innovator when it came to music and was never afraid to try new angles. “Thriller,” released November 30th, 1982, was a surprising turn for the 1980s. Not only was the song filled with creepy lyrics and a memorable opening monologue from horror actor Vincent Price, but the music video’s cinematography was incredibly advanced for the ‘80s. Jackson’s still shot when he became a zombie still haunts viewers in the best way possible. Michael Peters’ choreography still makes waves today as a dance people perform together when the song plays.

Prince’s “Purple Rain”

The 1984 classic “Purple Rain” was a hit for both music and movies. Prince cemented himself as a living legend at only 25 years old with his talent in both acting and music-making. The rock-heavy song was the title song for the movie and album of the same name. With such heartbreaking lyrics that encapsulate the emotional upbringing the singer endured, the song is beautifully crafted. Though not a high-energy pop song that makes you dance, Prince makes you feel and reflect on your own life.

Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”

You can’t have an iconic song list without this track. “Single Ladies” is still a party and club staple even 15 years later. Featuring a famous choreography created by JaQuel Knight, Beyoncé made a huge mark in the pop culture world with this favorite. Released October 8th, 2008, this song was arguably one of the most popular songs to come out that year. The early 2000s were filled with memorable songs, but this one will continue to be a fan favorite for decades to come. While Beyoncé has been a household name since the ‘90s during her time with Destiny’s Child, “Single Ladies” will always be one of the first songs that comes to mind when thinking of Beyoncé.

Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”

Many still can’t hear or read the word “respect” without adding this song in their head. Aretha Franklin’s strong vocals were a driving force among female singers in 1967. While “Respect” was originally created by Otis Redding, Franklin’s remastered version was a huge hit. The classic, passed down through generations, is a signature women’s empowerment tune. Franklin aims to tell women that while they can be nurturing, they deserve the same respect and love they give. No matter how old you are, this is a powerful single that may be prominent at family reunions, as some Black mothers have loved the strength this song brings to themselves and their daughters.

New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain”

Ending with a song that is the definition of R&B, this track is a classic that never gets old, despite being released in 1988. New Edition gave and is still giving listeners music in many genres and doing it all effortlessly. Dabbling in hip-hop, pop, rap, and in this case, R&B, the group has been making hits since a very young age. “Can You Stand the Rain” was released with the new member of New Edition, Johnny Gill. Regardless of the changes made to the group, New Edition added another legendary track to their long list of hits. Just like the other songs on this list, “Can You Stand the Rain” is another classic that transcends decades.

While there is a plethora of historical music from Black artists, these are some of EnVi’s best of the best. Celebrating the music listeners have loved for decades recognizes the impact felt today and in the future through these artists and their work.

Braids are a style that dates back as far as 3500 B.C. for both Black women and men, with them becoming popular in the 1900s. The hairstyle has always been a perfect go-to for looking good with little to no effort. Braids are an easy way to wear various styles for concerts, depending on your aesthetics and comfort. You can also enjoy the concert without being too worried about your hair frizzing, tangling, or looking “sweated out.” While many may think of only box braids or cornrows, braids have evolved so much throughout the years that there are so many to choose from. Consider one of many braid types if you’re planning a versatile hair look.

Miniskirts

Miniskirts are a fun, newer concert trend that brings both comfort and cuteness. Like braids, miniskirts are also versatile in style and a perfect addition to various outfits. These can be a simple look that works as a cute layer to an outfit or they can be more campy and stand out. While flare and leather miniskirts are the most trendy, especially for K-pop fans, miniskirts have a wide variety to consider when putting together an outfit. Since the skirt is shorter, it pairs well with boots or heels. Concertgoers also have plenty of legroom to dance, walk, and enjoy the concert with less restriction. Don’t be afraid to show your beautiful legs!

Demonias

A favorite among K-pop concert lovers, demonias are an alternative footwear that defies the meaning of a normal boot. Demonias have been made most popular by people who enjoy goth, grunge, or punk fashion and evolved into a K-pop fan favorite. From fur to glitter, you can expect to see these shoes paired with an array of bottoms, but often with miniskirts. Many Black fans tend to wear pastel, white, or lighter-colored demonias,  their skin tones. Demonias are the perfect footwear for standing out at a concert if you want to step out of your comfort zone.

Vice Unit Wig

While this hair may be trendy now, the vice unit wig has been around for years at beauty supply stores. A huge part of growing up Black and getting your hair done meant going to the beauty supply store and having a mannequin stare at you with this wig on. Black women have brought these units back into style. Many still buy this unit from the hair store, but even more wig makers have created their own. Concert fans have used this hair to add a pop of color to their attire. Similar to braids, Black fans can add a wig to minimize a hair disaster, from sweating to the occasional water toss from performers. The unit has an array of colors that go well with melanated skin, as it’s made for Black women. You can’t go wrong with this style.

Fuzzy Head Attire

A winter-based concert favorite is a fuzzy head accessory. While not as new, furry and fuzzy accessories are becoming more popular among Black fans. At concerts, you’ll usually find an ear muff, hat, or fur-trimmed hood. Often paired with fur demonias, a fuzzy head accessory is a girly addition to a cute outfit. Black fans can wear these accessories to accent a multitude of hairstyles and makeup while creating a soft look. It’s a statement piece that isn’t too ostentatious (unless you want it to be, then consider a colorful one). When styled over the hair, these accessories can actually keep hair in place or keep it out of your face while you dance the night away!

In a world where Black hairstyles in animation are often limited to straight or dollop-shaped ponytails, Brush by Vegalia provides the solution to a decades-old problem. Created in 2021, these brushes allow artists to boundlessly experiment with the versatility of Black hairstyles. Artists who specialize in creating using Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, and more can now test the limits of Black hair in fine detail. Brush by Vegalia not only provides artists with diverse hairstyles for their characters, but unique hair accessories as well, such as beads, bo-bos, and chains. As people are continuing to embrace their Black hair, acknowledging the depths to which we can see ourselves in popular media is of high importance. This Black History Month, Vegalia Jean-Pierre spoke to EnVi about her brushes, its importance among artists, and the multifaceted nature of Black hair!

A Brush with History

Brush by Vegalia was created by Vegalia Jean-Pierre after a long bout of painstakingly drawing braids for her own character. She faced difficulty adding the proper details in a time-effective manner. Feeling that there had to be a better way to go about doing this, Vegalia created a line of her own brushes to aid artists in drawing realistic and unique Black hairstyles. What started as a 12-brush pack on Etsy soon blossomed into a crucial tool in drawing Black hair for digital artists. “I like using my brushes to speed up my process of creating a character. I can be indecisive when it comes to developing a new art piece and the brushes allow me to make quick changes without having to spend too much time on it,” Vegalia says.

As an artist myself, I can wholeheartedly attest to the difficulty of tackling hair as a whole, as the creation of braids, whether traditionally or digitally, can be an extremely time-consuming labor of love. Prior to familiarizing myself with the Brush by Vegalia company, I was used to drawing out each braid or twist one-by-one and using nature brushes for afros, as is a common practice among many digital artists. The process of creating braids, locs, or twists, in addition to the hair parting and accessories such as beads, was anything but simple for me. Now, not only have these brushes made the process of drawing Black hairstyles much easier, the mere activity of reimagining diversity in Black beauty has become all the more enjoyable.

The brushes provide a stress-free way to tackle the outline and formation of Black hairstyles. There are individual brush packs for afros, braids, dreadlocks, baby hairs, cornrows, partings, and more. This allows artists to cut down on time devoted to the hairstyles of their characters while also providing them the ability to test out new styles and textures. In reference to the importance of proper Black hair representation, Vegalia notes, “I think it’s important for any artist to broaden their horizons. If you stick to drawing one thing, you are limiting yourself in any area so I believe that expanding your skills is a good thing. Whether that be Black hair, drawing different body types, skin tones, etc.”

Common Creations

These brushes accommodate artists who draw using Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, and Adobe Fresco. Artists can purchase brushes catered to hair, jewelry, and eyelashes in a diverse set of packs for each art program or app. Conveying the beauty of the brushes across social media sites has had a positive effect on the company’s exposure as well. The brushes have a loyal following on both TikTok and Instagram, with the official tag hosting over 1,000 drawings from artists across the globe and the launch video garnering over a million views. The tag illustrates an abundance of artists finding unique ways to portray Black hair.

“I love when people make a series with the brushes. Like when someone will draw a bunch of different hairstyles with the brushes for their character design. I love when people get experimental and create hairstyles that aren’t so common as well,” says Vegalia. This highlights the importance of the Brushes by Vegalia brand. From Afros to eyebrows to baby hairs, both new and experienced artists can further their understanding and experimentation of Black hair.

Why It’s Important

Recently, artists and fans alike have begun speaking out about a common yet troubling trend surrounding Black hair in animation. For instance, Lashawna from Total Drama Island, Jodie from Daria, and Monique from Kim Possible all have common Black hairstyles, but little to no variation of color, styling, or versatility. Similar sentiments are echoed in the case of Killmonger’s hairstyle being copied and pasted across a number of Black male characters since the release of Black Panther. Whether the style is big or small, animators express little detail in depicting Black hair, with many male and female characters sporting blob-like masses on their heads.

These cases help emphasize the importance of Brushes by Vegalia giving creators a chance to test and depict Black hair in art. Just as Black people can be multifaceted and unique, Black hair can be as well, with every style and curl deserving of its own chance to shine. On the importance of correctly representing Black hair in art, Vegalia says, “It’s important to me because I want to see people that look like me and I think the brushes get rid of the barrier of any complexities that Black hair may have. I don’t think Black hair is difficult to draw, but some styles can be tedious like braids or super kinky curls, so the brushes help make the process simpler.”

Hair for You

All varieties of Black hair deserve to be seen and experimented with. The many textures, colors, and styling possibilities are all parts of the appeal that makes Black hair so uniquely interesting. Brushes by Vegalia encourages artists to not only imagine new styles for their own characters, but also reimagine what Black hair can be for the characters (and protagonists) of the future. Natural Black hair is natural for all Black people, so we deserve to see ourselves naturally in art.

BookTok has become a popular TikTok staple over the last couple of years. First made as a platform for readers to show their favorite books and make “bookish” jokes, BookTok also has given creators of all backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and ages a way to connect over their love of reading.

Check out EnVi’s list of books recommended by Black BookTok below!

The Lore and Lust Series by Karla Nikole

Described as a “sexy, queer, modern vampire slow-burn romance” by the author Karla Nikole herself, the Lore and Lust series is perfect for the romantasy reader. With a bit of every trope, the series ties in all of BookTok’s favorite things: romance, fantasy, beautiful imagery, action, and strong depictions of emotion. Lore and Lust tells the story of purebred vampires conquering their societies and falling in love in the process. With handsome men, romance, fantasy, and gorgeous cover art, this series is an easy eye-catcher at the bookstore!

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Highly recommended by content creator “compulsivebookbuyers,” Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert is a story about Chloe who, after almost dying, makes a list meant to get her that life she almost lost. After meeting Red, a guy she needs to help her be a rebel, the pair start to catch feelings. Written by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Talia Hibbert, this romance will pull at your heartstrings like no other.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is another page-turner about a powerful Black girl with natural hair. What more do you need to pick this one up? In the relatable Black BookToker Anjou’s TikTok, she describes this book perfectly: stressful in a good way. Legendborn tells the story of sixteen-year-old Bree who flees her home after the death of her mother. Unfortunately for Bree, magic will follow her everywhere. The story is an easy-to-read book that will have you stuck on your couch until you finish and will never let you forget about it. The good news is, Legendborn is only the first of its series, so when you’re finished reading, just go grab the second one!

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Image courtesy of Penguin Random House.

Tierramademedoit on TikTok shows readers how My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite can relate to them through a well-thought-out review of why they love this book, with her main points being the suspense and the connection she felt with the character. My Sister, the Serial Killer is about Korede, the sister of a serial-killing sister named Ayoola. Korede refuses to give up on her sister — despite her wrongdoings — because family is the most important. However, when Korede falls in love with a man who could be a potential victim, she has to make the decision of a lifetime. A contemporary book with romance, crime, and family, author Oyinkan Braithwaite will have you rethinking everything you thought about your family.

When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole

“Whatever you think is happening, it’s a million times worse,” said creator Jaha in their review TikTok for When No One Is Watching. When No One is Watching is by New York Times-acclaimed author Alyssa Cole, who is looking to make you anxious while also making you think about societal issues as a Black person in America. The unputdownable book is about Sydney Green as she watches the gentrification of her Brooklyn neighborhood happen faster than she can breathe. When Sydney decides to dig deeper into this gentrification, scary truths that she could’ve never imagined come to light. A great way to end this list of books, this thriller is a terrifying look into modern-day Black societies being taken over by white neighbors. Don’t read this one at night!

COLORSxSTUDIOS is a platform founded in 2016 to show global sounds in a minimalistic way. COLORS is continuously growing its presence on YouTube and currently has 7.25 million subscribers and over 2 billion views. The channel has featured many popular artists from Alicia Keys to Skepta, but thrives off of appearances from newer musicians with growing audiences. Here are five COLORS performances by up-and-coming Black artists from around the world to enhance your playlist.

“Muse” – Matt Ngesa

Matt Ngesa’s YouTube channel contains acoustic covers dating back to seven years ago, but 2020 is when his discography begins. He uses the COLORS stage to share his song “Muse,” which he wrote during the pandemic. His distinct voice and guitar skills add individual color to his performance. As a Kenyan indie artist, Ngesa is breaking barriers by showing the diversity of music internationally. COLORS is just the start for Matt Ngesa as he is working on the release of his first EP.

“EVERYBODY LOVES A WINNER” – Talia Goddess

Based in New York with Guyunese-British roots, Talia Goddess takes inspiration from every aspect of her identity to form a one-of-a-kind sound. From the start of her COLORS performance, she demands the stage through her charismatic energy and distinct cadence. “EVERYBODY LOVES A WINNER” is the final track on her DOWN 2 EARTH EP released in November 2023. At only 21 years old, Talia Goddess is also the founder of Trance Records, a record label and creative agency. Trance provides a safe space for young minority creatives and hosts events in New York like the annual SINDERELLA Queer Ball.

“Day by Day” – Amaria

Amaria’s songwriting, production, and vocal skills shine in her performance of “Day by Day.” The track features a rhythmic instrumental to accompany her soft yet soulful sound. Amaria is an American artist who started posting music online in early 2020, and has released two EPs, Bittersweet and All For You, since. In November 2023 she headlined her first show at The Peppermint Club in West Hollywood. This month she was named one of Spotify’s 2024 R&B Rising Artists to Watch alongside artists such as Leon Thomas and Tyla. You can catch Amaria’s “Day by Day” on the “Submissive Tour” with Destin Conrad this year!

“GROOVE WITH ME” – MAUIMØON

GROOVE WITH ME” by MAUIMØON entices listeners to do exactly that. The blend of African and American music influence in the melody and instrumental creates an appealing sound to many audiences. MAUIMØON comes to the COLORS stage representing Uganda, with many viewers commenting on how proud they are to be his fans. In 2023 he released his first project, From Uganda With Love. While fans await what MAUIMØON has yet to come in 2024, “GROOVE WITH ME” can keep you moving in the meantime!

“Summertime” – Shaé Universe

Shaé Universe’s voice has graced single tracks for years but it wasn’t until 2022 that she released her first EP Unorthodox. She’s collaborated with other UK artists in the past such as Ms. Banks and ENNY, and is on the rise herself. The COLORS stage lets her smooth voice take the spotlight. “Summertime” captures the lingering emotions of missing the warmth of love, and her second project Love’s Letter drops on Valentine’s Day.

Each of these artists brought something new to the COLORS stage, and hopefully to your playlist as well. COLORSxSTUDIOS currently has open submissions for artists looking to be featured on their website. You can apply to submit your music here.

After releasing the introspective tell-all single, “Cobra,” Megan Thee Stallion calls the shots with her latest single, “Hiss.” She bagged a #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the first independent Black woman artist to reach number one on the chart. She teased the track through a series of Instagram posts on Monday, January 22nd, leaving fans wondering what type of music the rapper will release. After all, the Houston rapper has a catalog of songs that tell versatile stories, from the sobering tracks of loss, such as “Anxiety,” to hard-hitting disses like “Plan B.” On Wednesday, January 24th, she posted a short video, saying, “I just wanna kick this shit off by saying fuck yall.” Here, she’s laying all the cards on the table. On January 26th, the coveted rapper released “Hiss.”

Hear Her Hiss

“Hiss” is Megan’s catchall diss for every detractor in the industry and online. She incorporated her alter ego, Tina Snow, which is a play on Pimp C’s Tony Snow, to call out those who partook in her trauma over the past few years. It breaks the formula of your typical song, containing over three minutes of straight bars. One after another, each one more venomous than the last. But for Megan, “Hiss” is a warning. She likens the record to a snake giving off a warning hiss with the desires to be left alone. In an interview on the radio morning show, The Breakfast Club, the rapper tells host Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy, “I’m saying a hit dog gon’ holler… Whoever feel it, feel it.”

Feasting on Visuals

The “Hiss” music video is a hot topic across the internet. As of Sunday, January 28th, the video stood at over 4.1 million views and is trending at number one on YouTube. Known to use elements of surrealism and horror into her music videos, Megan Thee Stallion continues to further her visual story with “Hiss.”

As an anime fan, Megan has weaved her love for the artform in her music and visuals. With her latest releases, the Houston rapper incorporated snake and ghoul imagery. Whereas “Cobra” takes elements from popular Naruto characters, such as Orochimaru and Sasuke, “Hiss” pulls from the harrowing anime, Tokyo Ghoul. Here, Megan likens herself to the anime’s main character, Kaneki Ken

Megan Makes Herstory

This track marked her second release as an independent artist, following a tumultuous split from her past label, 1501. But the Houston rapper is already seeing a bright start to her new journey in the independent space. On TKTK, she appeared on Good Morning America, revealing to fans that a full length studio album is in the works — including a tour. Locking in a historic music distribution deal with Warner Music, she has retained both her masters and publishing rights under Hot Girl Productions, LLC. After the news, she took to Instagram Live to celebrate the number-one placement on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by previewing new music. With new music, an album, and a summer tour on its way, It’s quite clear that 2024 will be the year for Megan Thee Stallion.
