Fandom Love Letters is a series for fans to share their love for their idols through writing. EnVi understands the impact of idols in fans’ lives and the importance of a safe space for expressing this through writing. Through this, we aim to foster a positive community for fans worldwide. In celebration of the fourth anniversary of NCT Johnny’s YouTube series — Johnny’s Communication Center (JCC) — his fans, the Johfams, wrote thank you letters for the series. 

Dear JCC,

First and foremost happy anniversary! Wow, this is probably the only regular content from the NCT channel that’s still here today and I’m glad about it. There are so many things I love about JCC– how Johnny hosts the show, when he took us behind the scenes for the album production or meet up with the designers of their outfit. It gave us knowledge about the process and everything. But also, I enjoyed seeing you learning new things, and whatever you’re doing with Mark who you got the best chemistry with in my opinion, I hope you keep doing JCC in the future. Happy Anniversary! From the very first thanksgiving episode to the most recent one, surfing in California, JCC has been entertaining, funny, and even educational! I love sitting down to watch an episode and end up learning something new, whether it be about the steps of brewing beer or the process of making stage outfits. It’s also so fun seeing the different NCT members on the show and how they accompany Johnny in learning new things. Thank you for providing a source of comfort through every single episode. Whenever I’m sad or tired, an episode of JCC, usually the Ikea one which is my favorite, will lift my spirits and get me motivated again. Here’s to four years of JCC, hoping for many more to come! First of all, congratulations on your fourth anniversary. I’m so proud to be here since the beginning and see all the attention that JCC is receiving through the years. Second of all, I just wanna share how JCC changed my life and a specific day. I had been going through a very difficult week, I was working with my cousin in a pastry shop during rush hours, I was tired physically and psychologically, and thinking of giving up everything until I received the notification from the JCC channel. It was episode 27 and that gave me strength and encouraged me to keep working. I have so much to say that it wouldn’t fit in a few words, but the important thing to me is to atleast say thank you, not only for the wonderful content but for the effort, dedication, and all love that Johnny gives us. It’s been four years since it started and I can’t believe I was there to witness everything from episode zero to 35. I can’t believe how much time flies and you’re four years old now. What got me into JCC was my best friend who recommended it to me to get to know NCT when the pandemic hit and I was depressed . To get to know a K-pop group, I usually tune in to their variety content because I only become interested if I vibe with the characters behind the music. Youtube did its magic and I got tuned into the world of “foreign swaggers” and subsequently to JCC. Thank you Johnny for making this channel which gives us a glimpse into your shenanigans with the members. The videos make me smile, be in awe, and laugh out loud (JohnMark ones are the most iconic). I would definitely want to see JCC featuring more of Taeil, Jungwoo, Dreamies, WayV, SM Rookies, and many more SM idols. Words are non-existent when it comes to these episodes. JCC only gave me positivity and happiness. I don’t have enough paragraphs to tell how grateful I am to Johnny for making these awesome episodes. He really thinks through a lot and chooses stuff that is unique, enjoyable for Johfams, and at the same time very informative. I can list down a load of stuff that I learned through watching JCC episodes. It’s like a ray of sunshine to our darkness. I don’t know how Johnny manages to smile every time but I am only wishing for that smile to be forever there on his face and heart. JCC is super funny and it’s unimaginably calming. I must have recommended JCC to at least 50+ people by now. Because even if you are not a fan, you fall in love with Johnny and these videos, I can guarantee you that. For me, nothing compares to Johnny’s JCC. It’s my best way of comfort and pleasure. It’s my safe place and the place I find my true self. I wish Johnny a long life and my complete support and love for his dreams to come true. He loves us, Johfams a lot, and I genuinely feel it, and Johnny, we love you too! You are the best! Happy Anniversary Johnny’s Communication Center! This has been one of my favorite series since becoming an NCTzen and Johfam, and I have definitely grown an attachment to the show. I have been watching every episode since the very beginning and I appreciate how Johnny expresses his love for trying new things through the show. Johnny also brings his members along with him and they create many funny moments and memories that always make me very happy! JCC became such a big motivation for me and I have learned a lot since watching. My top three favorite JCC episodes are Freaky Handshake (episode 18), I’m Home (episode 27), and making Christmas cookies (episode 25) because I definitely laughed the most while watching those. First and foremost, I want to say happy fourth-year anniversary! I can’t believe how much time has passed since the first episode. JCC is a show that has given me so much joy and comfort over the years as a Johfam, and I always cherish these moments that Johnny shares with the fans. An episode that means a lot to me is episode 10 when Johnny has a sleepover with Mark and Doyoung in his hometown. Johnny doesn’t often have opportunities to visit Chicago, but being able to see how comfortable he was in showing his members where he grew up, this episode always leaves me feeling vicariously nostalgic. Precious moments like these are what make JCC so great as a fan. Overall, I just love seeing Johnny happy, whether he’s doing something by himself or with members. Hello! Since yesterday, I have been thinking about what I should write in this letter. Maybe about my favorite JCC moments, what JCC means to me, or even something simple, like my favorite JCC episode? But here I am, not sure how to start, because JCC has brought a lot of indescribable joy and happiness into my life. For me JCC is one of the best youtube content I ever found, I love the way we get new trivia from every episode. I really wanna say thank you to him for this content. You were one of the first contents I watched when I got into NCT 127. I became a full-fledged fan during Regular-Irregular album promotions and since then, I’ve appreciated how JCC has helped me get to know not just Johnny, but other members as well who have been guests in the series. I really love that JCC encourages fans like me to try new things! It’s like I gain confidence seeing Johnny take on a challenging activity or hobby with each episode. Sometimes I would check out old episodes and rewatch them after a tiring day or when I needed cheering up. Thank you so much for providing my “emotional support videos”. Happy fourth anniversary! I still remember the time when I am still unfamiliar with NCT and I was just browsing its content on Youtube, I stumbled upon Johnny’s JCC series and I immediately fell in love with it. We’ve come so far since then. Thank you Johnny for still uploading new episodes despite your busy schedule. Your genuine passion for exploring new things and doing activities that you like then sharing them with your fans is what makes JCC unique among any K-idol vlogs. For me, the JCC series is one of the purest vlogs in terms of content. Words are not enough to describe what I feel whenever I watch its episodes– it’s a mixture of happiness whenever I receive a notification about a new upload, the excitement of watching it as I discover new stuff, the countless laughs I made whenever Johnny makes a joke or when Johnny puts on the biggest smile as he enjoys what he’s doing, and the sadness I feel after every end of the episode then longing until there will be a new episode again. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions but it is something I want to experience over and over again. Johnny, please continue sharing more of you through this series. Dear Johnny,

When I first saw you in a video, something about the way you didn’t care about the rules of the game and only wanted to make people smile and laugh made me know instantly that you were positivity personified. As I’ve followed your career, I’ve come to know that spreading joy, happiness, laughter, and comfort are just part of who you are. You put so much love into the world and I can only hope that you feel it returned ten-fold from me and other NCTzens.

Your comforting words and positivity have continued to encourage me, even when I’m down. I see you going into the world with such brightness and think that if you can do it, I can try and do it too. Your gentleness towards others is truly something that I admire. It’s with pride that I can say I’m a fan of such an amazing person; someone who brings happiness with them wherever they go. 

It’s clear you pour your passion into everything you do, and I’m so proud of you for it. The countless hours of practicing and performing can’t be easy and yet you bring your smile and positive energy into every situation. You always crack a joke at the right time or know the right thing to say whenever there’s a stall in the room or conversation. Your ability to liven up anywhere you are is such a joy to witness.

Your energy and kindness remind me of a big brother I never had or a best friend who always has just the right advice. Your constant encouragement always comes at the right time. I still don’t know how you manage to say just the right things for so many people every time. This support that we all give you is given back, and I feel so fortunate that we’re able to support each other. 

Finally, I just want to tell you how grateful I am for your authenticity. You are unabashedly confident and proudly you. The way you carry yourself with so much confidence encourages me to be a little more confident every day. Your confidence is inspiring and more helpful on the hard days than you could imagine. Your refusal to be anything but yourself—the fashion evaluator, the coffee lover, the laughter inducer, the confidence haver, the performance giver, and the happiness bringer—is what makes being your fan such an incredible thing.

You’ve done so many incredible things, and I know you’ll do even more, and I’m grateful I get to support you through it all. Thank you for being so incredibly you, Johnny Suh.

Dear JO1,

I want to start off by saying congratulations on your 2 year debut anniversary! They say time flies when you are having fun, and the seconds have soared for me. In the blink of an eye, all 11 of you have become such an important part of my life, and all I can say is “thank you.”

I stumbled upon JO1 in February of 2020, just before your debut. I was going to study abroad in Tokyo, and I wanted to find Japanese artists to listen to while I was abroad. I found you by chance, just from a simple Twitter search. Who would’ve thought that a single tweet would change my life in such a drastic way? After watching the 無限大 music video, I saw so much untapped potential, I knew instantly I would have to stick around. There was a hint of something in all of you, in your dancing and in your voices, and it pulled me in so quickly I barely had time to breathe. I had loved other groups before, but not like this. This was a whirlwind of emotions from the start, a tsunami of adoration, with each video I watched of you being a wave that pulled me further and further out to sea. I didn’t mind being stranded; you guys were my life jacket anyway.

Since then, my love for each of you has only grown. I have watched you since then grow into the group that you are now. For two years I have stood by and watched through every success, every failure, every good and bad time. Yet through it all, you have always been the same, sweet, passionate boys all chasing the same dream. Each of you is a shining star in your own right, and together you make up one of the most beautiful constellations. Fitting, considering the theme of your debut single was the birth of stars. I think it suits you well, because now, you are one of the universe’s most amazing creations. All of your hard work has paid off, and it’s been so rewarding to watch each of you learn and become stronger in so many different aspects. When I met each of you in KCON:TACT 2 in October 2020, I told you how proud I was of each of you, and it’s still true. I could not be more proud of the version of yourselves you are today. From singing, to dancing and everything in between, you all have put in so much hard work and effort to become the best versions for JAMs, when in reality, you have always been enough.

I would be so lost if it weren’t for your constant, comforting presence in my life. Because of you, I too strive to be the best version of myself. So this letter is a “thank you”. Thank you for helping me believe in myself. Thank you for chasing your dreams and inspiring me and others to do the same. Thank you for being a beacon of hope, a guiding star in the sky for so many. Thank you for all the work that you do to make us happy. Thank you for showing us every side of you, and for allowing us to love you wholly. Thank you for the laughs, and the cheers, and the smiles, and the feelings of warmth that will never fade. Thank you for getting me through some of the worst times, and for being the reason for some of the best times. Thank you for coming into my life and changing it for the better. And thank you for being JO1.

It’s been two years, and these two years have been some of the best in my life, thanks to each one of you. I can’t wait to spend more with you and to follow you to the top of the world.

Dear NCT,

I met you not too long ago – by the end of 2019 to be more precise. I met you during the start of a pandemic, and, in no time, NCITY became my safe place. My escape.

During 2020, you made me calm, while focusing on your music, in your sound; distracted me from the chaos outside, helped me not to go crazy hahaha. 

Now, in 2021, it all accumulated: I completed 17 years, the coronavirus is still going, and I’m in my last school year, studying until I go crazy (I’m going crazy~~) to get into the university I want. So NCT has been my source of serotonin, and songs like “Angel” or “Rainbow” are everything to me. 

Not too long ago, I wrote a poem for you, so here it is (it’s in Portuguese, but it comes from my heart):

escapism

a garden,
23 flowers.
all of them different
and green colored.
the garden,
in my heart.
i’m afraid it’ll leave
from me.
the garden,
that i won’t be able to water no more.
yet still i know that here
it’ll stay,
even if it goes,
the roots that one
day supported it,
still it’ll resonate
in the heart
those sounds the flowers sang,
those scents they exhaled,
that peace they provided,
and gave inspiration.
nothing marked this period
like the growth of the garden.
so loved planted itself.
the garden took care of me
when not even my self watered it.

Thank you for taking care of me even without knowing it.

For today’s feature, in honor of JO1 Kono Junki’s 24th birthday, Rin shares her admiration for the artist as well as what his name means to her.

Dear Junki, 

When you were born, your parents picked out a beautiful name–純喜–written with the characters 純 meaning “pure” and 喜 meaning “happy.” Even today on your birthday 24 years later, you live up to your name as my “pure happy” inspiration. 

If I’m being honest, I’ve lost count of the number of times you’ve brought light and joy into my life, helping me through difficult times. Despite that, I can still remember the first time I heard your voice as if it were just yesterday. Back in early 2020 when I almost gave up on my dreams of studying Japanese and moving to Japan, I discovered JO1 by complete chance, and one of your first lines in “無限大 (INFINITY)” called out to me: 「限りない夢を掴め」。 “Seize your infinite dream.” With that line as my new motto, I found the motivation to keep fighting for my dream just as you had during your own journey. 

Truly, you’re a shining star of inspiration. Not many people can say that they’ve gone from an accomplished university student with promising career prospects to a skilled and cherished J-pop idol, but you can. Despite the challenges you had faced during music auditions, PRODUCE101 JAPAN, and debut, your faith in yourself and your dream never wavered. Now, less than two years after debut, you nail every note (I still get emotional when I listen to your solo version of “Voice”), dance like you’ve been practicing your whole life, and even write and produce music. Skills aside, you’re also incredibly kind and loving to your fellow JO1 members, taking care of everyone and striving to achieve your dreams together. 

Now as I write this letter and really think about it, it’s kind of a funny coincidence that your name means “pure happy” when our chance interactions revolve around happiness. On JO1’s first debut anniversary in March of 2021, your group held a mention party, and I tweeted that the joy I had felt the previous year was all thanks to you. To my utter delight, you replied and said that you wanted me to be happy the next year, the year after that, and forever too, so you would work hard to make it happen. Then, I won a fancall with you in October later that year, and your face lit up in shock and excitement when I said that you make me happy just by being happy yourself. 

Junki, I wasn’t lying when I told you that, and I am just as confident about that now as I was then. I think I speak for all JAMs when I say that your happiness is the most important thing. Seeing you enjoying yourself with your shining smile and “tension MAX” energy as you do what you love not only comforts us, but your light is so infectious that it also inspires all of us to be just like you. 

I am so lucky to have stumbled upon you and JO1 back when I needed you the most; I really don’t know who I would be now without you. I’m honored to have been your fan when you were 22 and 23, and I’m so excited to support 24-year-old Kono Junki just as much. 

My dearest Junki, happy birthday. I’m wishing you so much love and happiness now and forever.

Dear Yuta and Shotaro,

Yuta,  I sobbed when you debuted. I had thought about finding a way to audition for SM specifically but was scared (and very young). I did not want the pressure of being the first. I never thought the company wanted anything to do with people like us or give me the time of day. 

Do you even realize you’re history in the making? You’re paving the way for other Japanese artists in the K-pop and general music industry. It makes me so happy and hopeful to see Japanese artists like you establishing an impact. 

I applaud your courage in accomplishing something I never had the courage to do. 

Shotaro, I couldn’t believe it when I saw that you were debuting in NCT 2020. You dance like no other. The talents both you and Yuta have are god-like. I know you will go on to accomplish great things. 

I know this is only the beginning. There are many of us who want that Japanese unit and see both of you venture out and achieve all your dreams. Yuta, you would be an exquisite leader, too. 

I am still young enough to audition and considering it. I’ve been singing and dancing since I was very young. The two of you motivate me to keep going.

Dear Bangtan,

I was 16 when you first came into my life. It was my last year in high school, the last weeks actually, and you sang your way into my heart and soul. You helped me get through that period when big changes were happening in my life. For years I wouldn’t spend a day without listening to you, watching your videos, or just singing your songs, absentmindedly, to myself. Despite having been into K-pop for two years prior to our first introduction, you were the one that made me want to learn more and aim higher when it came to understanding Korean culture. You opened my mind to a whole new world that I never expected to fall in love with.

I was 19 when I started moving away from K-pop and from you; I still don’t know why, I guess I just had too much going on back then. I still kept watching you from afar, never forgetting how important you were to me. Still, I let my interest be swept away in the sea of confusion and heartbreak I was braving at the time. 

I was 21 when I came back to you, or you came back to me? Perhaps, we met halfway, and I got the chance to fall in love with you all over again. You had changed and so had I. Slightly more mature and open to the idea of self-love for the first time in a long time, I could relate and absorb the message in your lyrics again. I started getting to know you again, and the more I learned about this new you, more peaceful and mature in your own right, the more I became fascinated with your surroundings again. As my interest for your culture resurrected, so did my passion for learning new things. Again, I was diving into your world with no intention of stopping. 

I am 23–almost 24–and I am so grateful for you. I am becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be, and you’ve been a witness of this transformation since I was a teenager. Perhaps more than a witness. I realize your presence, near or far, has helped me in more ways than you could possibly know. The world we live in is a mess, it is despairing at times and chaotic at best, but your presence has helped me in each step of the way, since the moment we met, in one way or another. Loving you has opened my eyes–and my heart and soul–to so much more; I love writing, I became a journalist, fell for more idols, groups, and artists (whatever you want to call them), expanded my horizons, learned new things, made more friends, met different people,  crave new challenges and set new goals every day. I realize some might wonder what those things have to do with you, but that’s for me to know, I don’t think I would ever be able to explain it fully. 

Thank you for walking into my life, thank you for being here, thank you for being you… and thank you for not giving up on me. After 8 years since our first encounter, I have not much else to say, except two little words…
